I'm absolutely convinced that if more people made bread, the world would be a happier place. First, the thrill you get from learning the skill of breadbaking is amazing. Second, the satisfaction you get from seeing others eat and enjoy your bread is like nothing else. Third, it's an economical first step towards being more self sufficient.
I want everyone to know the joy and the satisfaction of baking bread, so I have created "Fresh Bread Friday" here. Every week, I'll showcase a bread recipe that you can try out during the following week. In turn, I'll ask other bloggers to come on over and link up ANY recipe they have made that week, so we'll end up with a bunch (hopefully) of diverse and different recipes to try out and enjoy.
I want everyone to experience the joy of baking bread. I hope Fresh Bread Friday spurs you on to baking bread for your family.
This week, I thought we'd start out really simply and bake up some Pita Breads. These are great for making into sandwiches or to make small pizzas on. They are also a fairly simple bread recipe and pitas don't require any fancy methods.
Pita Bread
- 1 1/8 cup warm water
- 3 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 1/2 teaspoons yeast
In a bread Machine-
Put all of this into the bowl of a bread machine and set it to the dough cycle.
In a stand mixer-
Put the water, sugar, oil and yeast in the bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes, or until the yeast is foamy. Add in the salt and 2 cups of the flour. Mix well with a dough hook. Add in the remaining flour a little at a time until the dough forms a smooth ball, adding additional flour if necessary. Knead for 10 minutes. Place dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean cloth. Let the dough raise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
Shaping-
When the cycle is done or the dough has doubled in bulk, roll the dough out into a 12 inch rope and cut into 8 even pieces. Roll each piece into a 6 or 7 inch circle and place on a floured surface to rest; repeat with remaining dough. Cover the dough circles with a towel and let rest for 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 500 degrees. When the oven has coe to temperature and the dough has rested, place 2-3 pita rounds onto a wire cooling rack and place directly on the rack of your oven. Let bake until puffy and lightly golden. Remove from oven and place into a paper bag or under a slightly damp towel. Repeat with remaining dough. Once all of the pitas have been cooked and the pitas have softened up, they can be stored in a plastic freezer bag. Makes 8.
