13 Unusual Ways to Use Your Dehydrator

This blog post is also available as a podcast! Listen to Unique Ways To Use Your Dehydrator. Want to listen to more of my podcasts? Here are the Archives .

I know that Thanksgiving can be a hectic day! There are a lot of different dishes that need to be cooked up, but not always a lot of room in the oven or on the stovetop to get them cooked. So, instead of struggling to make ONE MORE THING on Thanksgiving, why not make your rolls now and have them ready on Turkey Day? It's simple and this blog post will show you how.

Make Your Thanksgiving Dinner Rolls Today!

Have you ever wondered if a food dehydrator is worth the cost of the investment? I always tell people YES!!! they are! Not only can you dehydrate loads of delicious and nutritious foods, but you can use if for crafting, decorating and other things as well.

13 Unique Ways To Use A Dehydrator
  • Cinnamon Applesauce ornaments: You can find the recipe HERE and then simply dry them on the trays in your dehydrator.
  • Salt dough ornaments: You can find the recipe HERE and then, like the Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments, you just dry them on trays in the dehydrator.
  • Dried flowers. Dry these on the "herb" setting if you have one and they will gently dry to be used in crafts, decorations and more!
  • Making cubes for homemade stuffing mixes. My husband LOVES Stove Top Stuffing, but we don't like the "extra" bits in those boxes. So, I dry leftover heels, pieces of bread and other leftovers bits of bread that I keep in a bag in the freezer and then cut it up into cubes and dehydrate. Add in some herbs, chicken bouillon and other spices and you have your own, homemade "boxed" stuffing mix.
  • Warm up mittens and hats. When we get cold weather, I like to turn on my dehydrator and then each one of my little kids can put their hats, gloves and even socks inside and let them heat up on their trips in and out of the house to play. As long as the clothing items aren't SOAKING wet, they will warm up and dry super fast and you won't have to heat up the dryer over and over again.
  • Dry extra glue-y artwork. My kids tend to use a LOT of glue on school projects and craft work. So, I let it dry in the dehydrator. There's no chance of someone sticking a finger in the wet glue or of the project falling off the table and making a mess!
  • Dry play dough and air dry clay sculpture. Keeps the masterpieces out of harms way and dries them evenly and faster than just air drying.
  • Using scraps left over from canning to make potpourri mixes. Save peach peel and pits, apple peels and core, pear peels and cores, etc. Spread them out on your dehydrator trays and dry. Then, you can package for a "wet" potpourri to be used with water, or package them for "dry" potpourri and add a few drops of scent or essential oils for smell factor. You can give this as gifts and you are literally taking trash and turning it into gifts!
  • Drying mini marshmallows for homemade hot cocoa mixes. If you make your own hot cocoa mix and skip the little packages, your little kids (and big kids, too!) don't have to be missing their mini marshmallow fix. Dehydrate small marshmallows and add them to homemade hot cocoa mix.
  •  Drying large pieces of orange peel to use for fire starters. This works great! The peel gets very dry and the oils concentrate, making a dry piece of peel  perfect for fire starting.
  • Making homemade paper. Blend up your paper fiber and spread it out over dehydrator sheets and let it dry. Add in flowers or little extra pretty bits and you can make beautiful homemade paper!
  • using your dehydrator as a humidifier. Place a few bowls of water and turn it on high. The air will stop being so dry and you don't have to spend money on a humidifier
  • Dried oranges, dried apples, other dried fruit to make wreaths, garlands and ornaments. We use them for stringing among our popcorn stands for our Christmas Tree! You can do so many crafts with dried fruit OR you can add the dried slices to hot cider, mulled wine or many other food and drinks.
I have an Excalibur 3526TB Excalibur 3526TB 5 Tray Dehydrator with Timer Black, 1, Black and I LOVE IT!!! As you can see, you can use them for so much more than dehydrating food.
