A good dinner roll can really enhance a meal. Think about it, what's better than dipping a buttery, soft roll into a thick, hearty beef barley soup? A basket of freshly baked bread can take a chef salad dinner from good to great! Can you tell I love bread? I do. I really, really do. And when the bread is soft, buttery and easily shaped into whatever you want, it's even better.
Pinterest is a really lovely invention, isn't it? I found these rolls one night as I was skimming through the food section. I have to thank Is This Really My Life? for sharing them with the world, even though they had previously been her closely guarded dinner roll recipe. They are worth sharing!
So far, I've made these as crescent shaped rolls, as regular dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls and even as cheesy breadsticks- proving that this is an easy to customize recipe. It is egg and butter rich, making it perfect for freezing or making ahead because it stays so soft and wonderful.
Buttery Crescent Shaped Rolls
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/3 cup butter, softened
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 3/4 cups flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoon yeast (or one packet)
- 2 Tablespoons butter, softened
For a bread machine: place all of the ingredients in the bowl of the mixer and set to the dough cycle.
For a mixer: put the water and milk into the bowl of your stand mixer, add sugar and yeast, let sit 10 minutes. Add in the egg, butter, salt and one cup of flour. Beat for one minute. Mix in the remaining flour until a smooth dough forms. Place in a clean bowl, cover with a piece of plastic wrap or a clean dishcloth and let sit until double, about one hour.
To shape: Divide dough in half; set one aside. Roll out one half of the dough into a 12 inch circle. Spread with softened butter and cut like a pizza into 6 pieces and roll them up, starting with the wide end and ending with the point. Lay, point side down, on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Repeat with remaining triangles. Roll and cut the second ball of dough and repeat the cutting and rolling process. Let the roll raise, covered with a towel or plastic wrap, until just about doubled in size.
Bake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
I know I say it all the time, but these are really good. They're simple and they bake up quickly, making them a great addition to any meal. Or as a snack. Or breakfast. You get the idea :)
