I don't know if these are better than Krispy Kreme, or if they even taste like them at all, because the last time I ate a Krispy Kreme it was 11 years ago and I was on my honeymoon. In Vegas. I remember that they were good, but we thought they were way over priced. Imagine that, me thinking something was over priced! Ha!
When I saw this recipe on Pinterest I filed it away for a rainy day. It's been a rainy week here, so a lot of my rainy days pins have been worked on so far. I made these this morning and I was impressed, but like I said not because I know what a Krispy Kreme tastes like. If a Krispy Kreme is light, airy, melt in your mouth delicious then yes, these taste like Krispy Kreme.
I have a recipe that I love for Raised Pumpkin Donuts, but for plain ones I always just used my bread recipe and cut them out. Those donuts are usually really good, but these are better by far. They have a lighter-than-air texture with a buttery flavor from the glaze. They really are delicious and NOT nutritious. They're donuts.....don't try to healthify them. They are a once in a while treat, not an everyday food. They also happen to be one of the only foods I make that I like to use white, unbleached flour in.
Krispy Kreme Knock-Offs
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2 eggs
- 5 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons yeast
Put the milk, sugar and butter in a small saucepan and heat, over medium low heat, until the butter melts and the milk is lukewarm. DO NOT BOIL. Put the milk mixture into the bottom of the tub of your bread machine. Add the eggs next, then the flour, salt and yeast. Turn the bread machine onto the "Dough" setting and let it mix. When the dough cycle is over, roll the dough out on a floured surface about 1/2 inch thick. Cut the doughnuts out and place them on lightly greased cookie sheets. Cover with a clean cloth and let raise until doubled, about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Fry the doughnuts and doughnut holes in 350 degree oil for a 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove from the oil and let drain. Dip in glaze; let dry.
Doughnut Glaze
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 4 Tablespoons hot water
Melt the butter; add in powdered sugar and vanilla. Stir well, adding in enough of the hot water to make a thin glaze. Dip doughnuts, one at a time, in the glaze. Let set before eating.
If you don't have a set of doughnut cutters, don't worry! I use a wide mouth canning ring and the lid off of a bottle of vanilla (AKA a 1/2 gallon bottle of vodka) to cut out my doughnuts. It works like a charm and they are things I already have around the house. I'm all about multitasking whenever possible. So, make these and come back to tell me- Are they better than Krispy Kremes? I need to know! Want to know the best part? 24 of these cost me about $2.00. Seriously.
