Forget Trying To Feed The Birds
My neighbors are old. He retired as a bridge builder in California and moved here in 1977. You try to figure out how old he is, I gave up. He and his wife love nothing more than to feed the birds. A very noble passtime if you ask me. I'll be outside and see them sitting at their table having coffee and watching the birds. It's all very cozy and sweet. Unless you are the one trying to feed the birds. You will not be able to compete with the virtual bird feast they have laid out. I have never seen anything like it, hanging bags of thistle, feeders of oiled sunflower seeds, suet cakes of every shape and size. That's not even counting the birdseed she told me they really like, some sort if magical mix of dried fruit, seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews and walnuts to be exact. I think they feed them trail mix. Did I mention the hummingbird feeders? Last count: 11. We gave up feeding the birds, now we just watch them eat all of the neighbors seed. Which is ok with me, it's cheaper that way :)

Do they have nests & boxes up for them? You could score a freeby by setting up your microclimate for the birds to enjoy. Lots of hi wires and perches with shades for hiding under in sun or rain. That's a one time investment.
